Grauer’s gorillas only live in eastern DRC and have lost nearly 80% of their population over the past 20 years primarily due to poaching fueled by insecurity in the region. This month, Grauer’s gorillas’ status was elevated to Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Grauer’s gorillas are also recognized as one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates by IUCN’s Primate Specialist Group, Conservation International, and the International Primatological Society.
GRACE is the world’s only rehabilitation program for Grauer’s gorillas orphaned by poaching and gives gorillas a chanc
artner with GRACE,” says Kim Lengel, Philadelphia Zoo’s VP for Conservation and Education. “We hope that naming Honi’s new baby after an orphaned gorilla at GRACE, and inviting our global community to select the name, will help make a connection and engage many in the efforts to save gorillas and other wildlife.”
