How Your Old Electronics Can Help Save Gorillas
Most of us upgrade our phones, tablets, or other electronics every few years. But have you ever thought about where those devices come from, or what happens to them when we’re done using them?
Many small electronics contain coltan (short for columbite-tantalite), a metallic ore that helps power rechargeable batteries. One of the world’s largest natural supplies of coltan is found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which is also home to critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas. Mining operations for coltan contribute to habitat destruction and human conflict, which puts people, wildlife (including gorillas), and forests at risk.
The good news? Recycling your old devices can help!
At GRACE, we’re working to protect Grauer’s gorillas, and one way you can help is by joining Gorillas on the Line, a global campaign that turns old electronics into support for gorilla conservation.
What is Gorillas on the Line?
Every year, from February 1 to September 1, GRACE participates in Gorillas on the Line, a conservation campaign led by AZA SAFE Gorilla. The goal is simple: collect as many old devices as possible to recycle responsibly.
Through our partnership with Eco-Cell, devices collected through Gorillas on the Line are recycled instead of ending up in landfills. Proceeds from these recycled items go directly toward gorilla conservation efforts, including those at GRACE.

About GRACE
Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the U.S. that operates the world’s only sanctuary for endemic and critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
